The Homeschool Diner's Guide to
Textbooks for Homeschoolers

by Julie Shepherd Knapp, copyright 2006

Textbooks are a time-honored method of teaching most subject areas.
There are many textbook publishers for the typical school topics and some
specialty publishers for less common topics.  Even when covering the
same topic, different textbooks vary in focus, scope, and content.  Finding
the right textbooks to fit your child's ability level and meet your educational
goals is the task.

Current editions by the major school publishers are designed to be heavy
on photographic content and Internet links, and are wide in scope.   Many
older editions are more conversational in tone, and tend to cover fewer
topics in greater detail.  Some families seek out older editions for some
subjects, and prefer the newer versions for other topics.

Current edition textbooks are quite expensive but, because textbooks are
frequently revised and updated, older (cheaper) versions can be found
easily.   Consider whether or not you need to have the most recent
edition, and whether or not you need to locate and purchase the
corresponding Teacher's Editon or Answer Key to go with the student
text.  Used textbooks can be found thru online used textbook suppliers, on
e-Bay, in thrift stores, and in used book stores.

Here are some Internet suppliers of textbooks, new and used.  In addition,
several curriculum suppliers listed in the "
School-at-Home" Section have
developed homeschool textbooks that can be purchased separately or as
a package.   Also check individual subject lists in the "Homeschooling by
Subject" section.

New Textbook Suppiers:
These suppliers typically sell to schools.  Some will sell to individual
homeschool buyers -- you will need to speak to a sales rep for more info.
